Five teens from Koinonia Santa Rosa de Villa and four adults from Koinonia Surco have been doing VBS in Cañete this week. The theme has been, "Searching for Eternal Treasure." Each day there has been Bible teaching about the theme. There have been games, arts and crafts and refreshments too. Tomorrow will be the last day.

Cinco adolescentes de Koinonia Santa Rosa de Villa y cuatro adultos de Koinonia Surco están en Cañete donde están haciendo la Escuela Bíblica de Verano. El tema ha sido, "En busca de Tesoro Eterno." Cada día han hecho una enseñanza bíblica acerce del tema. Los niños han hecho juegos y manualidades y han comido y tomado su refresco cada día también.

Here is the majority of the people that participated in the Vacation Bible School in Santa Rosa this year. This has been the best school that we´ve done so far for varios reasons. Thanks to all of you that helped us in so many ways. Now we´re planning for VBS in Cañete in a few weeks.

Como algunos de ustedes ya saben nuestra hermana Kati está en Iquitos. Salió de Lima el sábado por la mañana a llegó a Iguitos el mismo día. Estará ministrando con JUCUM por unos seis meses. Queremos orar por ella hoy día y todos los días. Va a ser un tiempo de aprendizaje y ministerio. Para nosotros es un gran privilegio poder participar en la obra misionera enviando a Kati.

As some of you already know our sister Kati is in Iquitos. She left Lima on Saturday morning and arrived in Iquitos the same day. She'll be ministering with YWAM for six months. We want to pray for her today and everyday. It will be a great time of learning and ministry for her. For us it's a great privilege to be able to participate the missionary work by sending Kati to the field.

Here we are on our way to the ministry in Cañete. Everyone has their green t-shirt on. Most of them are wearing the new Koinonia Surco t-shirts.

El miércoles y jueves hicimos un ministerio especial en Cañete. Fuimos a ministrar a los niños de Cañete el miércoles en la tarde. Luego fuimos a una casa de playa que nos ha prestado un amigo para hacer un mini retiro con 14 chicos de Cañete y Surco. Pasamos un tiempo lindo pero la verdad es que el miércoles hacía tanto calor en Cañete que yo estaba con ganas de echarme al lado de este perro y tomar una siesta.

This past Wednesday and Thursday we did some special ministry in Cañete. We went to minister to the children on Wednesday afternoon. After that we went to a house on the beach that a friend let us use. We did a mini retreat there with 14 children from Cañete and Surco. We had a nice time but the truth is that it was so hot in Cañete Wednesday that I wanted to lay down next to this dog and take a siesta.

Aquí en Koinonia no creemos que los niños son el futuro de la iglesia. Los niños ya forman parte de la iglesia y son una parte importante. Queremos ministrarlos bien pero también queremos formarlos como ministros de Cristo ya. No tienen que esperar hasta que sean grandes para comenzar a ministrar. El miércoles los niños de Koinonia Surco fueron a ministrar a los niños de Cañete.

Los niños que ministraron tienen entre 9 al 14 años y la profesora fue Estefany. Ella tiene 15 años. Hicieron la alabanza, títeres, un drama de la vida de José e enseñaron la palabra. Bien hecho chicos.

Here in Koinonia we don´t believe that the children are the future of the church. The children are the church already. In fact, they´re a very important part. We want to minister to them in an effective way but we also want them to minister for Christ as children. We want them to know in a practical way that they don´t have to wait until they are already grown up to minister. This past Wednesday the children from Koinonia Surco went to minister to the children of Cañete.

The children that ministered are between 9 and 14 years old and the teacher was Estefany. She´s 15. They did the worship, puppets, a drama about the life of Joseph and taught the Bible. Well done kids.

Mayormente los chicos se portan muy bien. Claro que algunos son terremotos pero eso esperamos. Creo que sería bueno tomar un poco de tiempo para orar por cada uno.

For the most part the kids behaved pretty well. Some of them are real earthquakes like we say here in Peru but we expected that. I think it would be good to take some time and pray for each one of them.

Oni was present helping with a lot of things. Jaime taught the word of God and I did too. If you look below you'll see what Angie and Jaqui did. Really we all helped to maintain order.

Si, estudiamos la Biblia pero fuimos a la playa también y el agua estaba rica. Ni muy fria, ni muy caliente. El tiempo nos quedó corto. Vamos a quedarnos mas tiempo la próxima vez. La naturaleza que Dios nos ha dado para disfrutar es maravillosa.

Yes, we studied the Bible but we went to the beach too. The water was great. It wasn't too cold or too hot. The time we spent there was too short. We'll stay longer next time. The nature that God has given us to enjoy is great.

Ayer y hoy estamos haciendo un viaje misionero a la ciudad de Ica. Ica es una ciudad que es ubicada a unas 4 horas al sur de Lima. Es una ciudad en la costa pero en el desierto. Es conocida por la agricultura y es un pueblo religioso pero también es conocida por la brujería. Ya tenemos un estudio bíblico aquí y Dios mediante Robin y Tracy estarán viviendo en la ciudad para ministrar en una manera más constante a la gente. Foto: La Plaza Mayor de Ica.

Yesterday and today we´re doing a missions trip to the city of Ica. Ica is a city that is located about 4 hours to the south of Lima. Ica is located in the coastal region but is part of the desert. It´s known for it´s agriculture and is a religious area also known for witchcraft. We have a Bible study here already and God willing, Robin and Tracy will be living here soon so that the people can be ministered to on a more constant basis. Foto: The Main Plaza of Ica.

Esta vez decidimos usar un poco de la plata que levantamos con la venta de chocotejas, marcianos, etc. para comprar polos con el nombre de nuestra iglesia. En el pasado hemos tenido algunas personas de unas sectas que han entrado cuando estábamos predicando y han querido pasar por ser parte de nuestro grupo. Así han querido engañar a la gente. Los polos indican quienes realmente forman parte y quienes no. Aquí modelando los polos son (de izquiedo y derecho), Jaqui, Angie y Oninxha. Jaqui siempre está pensando, Angie me ignora siempre y Oninxha siempre toma fotos. (estoy bromiando).

This time we decided to use some of the money we raised through the sale of chocotejas, marcianos, etc. to buy t-shirts with the church name on them. We´ve had some confusion in the past because people from some cults have gone in while we were preaching and made people think that they were part of our group. That way they have tried to trick the people. The t-shirts let the public know who we are. Modeling the t-shirts are from left to right: Jaqui, Angie and Oninxha. Jaqui is always thinking, Angie always ignores me and Oninxha always takes pictures. (just kidding).

Al llegar a Ica nos econtramos con Robin, Americo y Aaron. Ellos ya estaban en Ica preparando todo y participando en el estudio bíblico la noche anterios. Nos instalamos en el hotel y luego fuimos a la casa de la Señora Lucha. Ella y Rocio prepararon un almuerzo para nosotros. Comimos sopa seca con carapulcra. Delicioso. Muchas gracias. Después de almorzar y poner un poco de maquillaje (no todos), ya era tiempo de ir a la plaza. En las fotos: Robin, the food, Ariana y Marco.

When we got to Ica we met up with Robin, Americo and Aaron. They were already there getting everything ready and participating in the Bible study the night before. We went to the hotel and after that went to eat lunch. Ms. Lucha and Rocio had lunch ready for us. We ate dry soup and carapulcra. It was delicious. Thanks so much. After lunch it was time to put some make up on, (not everone) and go to the plaza. In the pictures: Robin, the food, Ariana and Marco.

Usamos varios métodos para compartir la palabra de Dios. Aquí pueden apreciar un poco de lo que hacemos. A veces explicamos la palabra en una manera simple. A veces utilizamos música, títeres, mimos, folletos y otras cosas. We use various methods to share the word of God. You can see a little bit of what we do here. Sometimes we share the word in a simple way. The Koinonia Clowns have been very busy the last few months. They´ve done shows in hospitals, a school, a church and now in Ica. Thanks clowns. This time the clowns that participated were Ariana, Rodrigo, Marco, Kristel and Oninxha.

Aquí pueden apreciar a algunas personas que escuharon en mensaje. Los niños en la foto abajo llegaron primero. No sé cuantas personas escucharon el mensaje porque la gente venía y se iba. Estábamos allí desde las 5:00p.m. hasta más de las 10:00 p.m. No tomé muchas fotos en la noche porque era un poco oscuro.

Here you can see some of the people that heard the message. The children in the bottom photo where the first to arrive. I really don´t know how many people attended the event because the people would come and go. We were there from 5:00 p.m. until after 10:00 p.m. I didn´t take a lot of pictures at night because it was a little too dark.

Rodrigo compartió una parte de la enseñanza para los niños. Los niños (Con Miguel Jorge como el árbol) actuaron y así explicaron la historia de Zaqueo. Lucas actuó como Jesús y Sergio Andres como Zaqueo.

Rodrigo shared a message teaching the children. The children (with Miguel Jorge that acted as the tree) did a sketch and in this way shared the story of Zaccheus. Lucas acted as Jesus and Sergio Andres as Zaccheus.

El grupo de mimos estaba muy ocupado ministrando. Hicieron 6 mimos durante la noche y cuando no estaban haciendo mimos, predicaban a la gente que estaba allí.

Americo compartió su testimonio predicó el evangelio. Pastor Jaime y Pastor Brian predicaron el evangelio también.

The mime group was very busy ministering. They did 6 mimes during the evening and when they weren´t doing mimes, they preached to the people that were there.

Americo shared his testimony and preached the gospel. Pastor Jaime and Pastor Brian preached the gospel too.

Después de ministrar en la plaza Barranca fuimos a comer pollo a la braza. Ya eran las 10 de la noche y estábamos con hambre.

Estoy muy contento con el grupo y lo que hicieron todos el día de ayer. Ministramos como equipo en unidad. No escuché ninguna queja. Todos estaban sirviendo con ganas. Gracias Señor.

El domingo fuimos a Santa Rosa de Villa como siempre. Pero esta vez fuimos con un grupo mas grande porque hicimos un evento especial para la navidad. Fue muy bueno ver a todos trabajando juntos y celebrando lo hermoso que es conocer a nuestro Señor Jesús. ¿Lo conoces? ¿Es tu Señor y Salvador? Si no es así escríbenos para que podamos comunicarnos contigo. Debes conocerlo.

This last Sunday we went to Santa Rosa de Villa like always. This time we went with a bigger group though because we did a special Christmas event. It was so good to see everyone working together y celebrating how wonderful it is to know our Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know Him? Is He your Lord and Savior? If not, write us so that we can communicate with you. You really should get to know Him.

Mucha gente llegó a nuestro programa especial. No había epacio para todos. Algunos miraron por las ventanas. Fue bueno poder predicar la palabra de Dios a estas personas. Gracias Señor. Gracias por usarnos en todo momento. Dios es fiel.

(Mateo 1 y 2)

Normalmente se enfatiza y destaca el ejemplo de obediencia de María en la historia del nacimiento del Señor. Sin duda, tiene un peso decisivo, pero no es menos cierto que a ello también ayuda el hecho de que Lucas, el evangelista que más detalles ofrece sobre este episodio, centre su narración en ella.

Mateo, en cambio, lo hace en José. Desde la genealogía con la que abre el evangelio lo presenta como descendiente del rey David, hecho indispensable para cumplir la profecía del linaje del Mesías.

Lo describe como un hombre justo (Mt. 1:19). Y como tal, su mayor acto de nobleza consiste en "no infamar" a María por el embarazo y "dejarla secretamente". Una conducta apreciable y que pocos contemporáneos suyos hubieran puesto en práctica. Sin embargo, para cumplir la voluntad de Dios, para tomar parte en sus planes eternos, se necesita mucho más que la propia nobleza, se necesita la intervención de Dios en nuestra vida. Y eso es justamente lo que José empieza a experimentar, pues es el Señor quien lo invita a unirse a la obra redentora en momentos cruciales. Y José, como María en la narración de Lucas, obedece sin condiciones. En Mateo 1:20, Dios le anuncia que María concebirá del Espíritu Santo, en 2:13 le advierte que Herodes quiere matar al niño y además le indica que debe viajar con su familia a Egipto, en 2:19 le comunica que Herodes ha muerto y que puede retornar, y en 2:22 recibe la indicación concreta de que reside en Galilea y no en Judea.

En todas partes estas direcciones de Dios, José debe hacer ajustes dramáticos en su vida. Ser parte de los planes de Dios implica a veces renunciar a una vida cómoda, apacible, ausente de contrariedades, e incluso-como sucede con José-andar a salto de mata, sin un programa preestablecido de mudanzas (materiales, espirituales, emocionales). O mejor, sin otro programa que el de Dios.

Cuando Dios llama a José a cumplir un rol en los primeros años de Jesús, incluyendo el periodo de gestación de María, su vida cambia drásticamente. Y desde entonces no deja de cambiar. Un hombre mas pacífico y sedentario súbitamente tiene enemigos, oposición, persecución, peligros y una vida en el mejor de los casos, errante.

Es increíble: no hay incredulidad, inseguridad ni rebeldía en José. Tampoco retrasa los planes de Dios tomando sus propias decisiones. Únicamente (lo cual, en realidad, es bastante) hace los ajustes que demanda el llamado de Dios. Obedece, siempre obedece. Y aun cuando se ejercita en la obediencia y adquiere un cierto discernimiento (es él quien percibe el peligro de regresar a Judea al enterarse de qu el hijo de Herodes gobernaba en su lugar), espera la dirección de Dios ante de tomar ninguna decisión.

No lo dice Mateo, pero es evidente que a la par que María en el relato de Lucas, José guardó todas estas cosas en su corazón.

Joseph´s Example
(Matthew 1 and 2)

The obedience of Mary is what is normally emphasized in the story of the birth of the Lord. Without a doubt it is very important and decisive. This is true because Luke the evangelist that gives us the most details regarding this episode centers his narration on her.

Matthew on the other hand places the emphasis on Joseph. From the genealogy that opens the gospel Joseph is presented as a descendant of king David. This is indispensable because it fulfills the prophecy regarding the lineage of the Messiah.

Matthew describes Joseph as a just man (Mt. 1:19). Being a just man his most noble act was that he didn’t want to make Mary a public example because of the pregnancy and so he planned to put her away secretly. The way Joseph acts here shows him to be a very distinguished man. He did something that very few of his contemporaries would have done. However, in order to fulfill the will of God and be part of His eternal plans, much more that noble behavior is needed. God needs to intervene in our lives. Joseph began to experience that very thing because the Lord is the one that invited Joseph to join with Him in God’s redemptive work at a crucial time. Just like Mary in Luke’s narration, Joseph obeys without any reservations and without putting any conditions.

En Matthew 1:20 God tells Joseph that Mary will conceive a son by the Holy Spirit; en 2:13 God warns him that Herod wants to kill the child and even tells him that he must flee to Egypt with the family; en 2:19 God tells Joseph that Herod has died and that it’s safe to return and in 2:22 he is told to reside in Galilee and not in Judea.

Each time that God guides Joseph, obedience to God’s call implies dramatic changes en Joseph’s life. To be part God’s plan means that at times we must reject a comfortable, peaceful life, absent of annoyances. It can even mean, (like we see in Joseph’s life) walking within one step of losing our lives, without a preestablished moving plan (materially, spiritually and emotionally speaking). Better said, being part of God’s plan means that there is no program other than God.

When God called Joseph to fulfill an important roll Jesus early life including the time of Mary’s pregnancy, his life changed dramatically. From the moment that God called him, his life never stopped being changed. A man that was peaceable and stationary suddenly became a man who had enemies, faced opposition, persecution and danger and even in the best times, a life of wandering.

Incredibly, we don’t see a lack of faith, insecurity o rebellion in Joseph. We don’t even see a delay in God’s plan because of Joseph making his own plans! The only thing we see (which in reality is quite a lot) is that Joseph makes that changes necessary due to God’s call on his life. Joseph obeys, he always obeys. Even when the act of obedience means using his own discernment (it’s Joseph that perceives the danger that would be involved in going back to Judea due to Herods son being the governor of Judea), Joseph waits for guidance from God before he makes a decision.

Matthew doesn’t say it but it’s evident that just like Mary, en the gospel of Luke, Joseph kept all of these things in his heart.

"Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna." Juan 3:16

¿Has pensado en lo maravilloso que es la frase, "porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo"?

Los judios del tiempo del apóstol Juan sabían que Dios los amaba, pero cuando Juan escribió que Dios ama al mundo, para la gran mayoría de los judios, esto era algo revolucionario. Ellos pensaban que Dios solo amaba a ellos como judios y a nadie más. Para la mayoría de los gentiles era algo nuevo y revolucionario también.

Cuando pienso en el hecho de que Dios ama al mundo varias cosas vienen a la mente.

En primer lugar, sabiendo que somos tan llenos de pecado y que no merecemos nada de Dios, el amor de Dios es incomprensible. Dios nos ama. Dios ama a todo el mundo. Que bueno es saberlo y recibir de Su gran amor.

En segundo lugar, si Dios ama al mundo este hecho revolucionario debería cambiar nuestras vidas por completo. Quiere decir que Dios ama a tus compañeros de trabajo, tus vecinos, tus familiares y tus enemigos. Quiere decir que es un amor tan grande que incluye a todos. Los que viven cerca y los que viven lejos son amados por Dios. Los que están cerca de El y los que están lejos, viviendo en pecado son los amados también.

En tercer lugar, si Dios ama al mundo, nosotros como Sus hijos debemos actuar o vivir conforme a esta verdad. Si Dios ama al mundo, entonces nosotros necesitamos una visión mundial como individuos y como iglesias. Nuestro enfoque debe ser en alcanzar a todo el mundo con este amor.

Podríamos hacer algo este fin de semana para participar en hacer a la gente del mundo escuchar del amor de Dios. Las opciones son sin límite. Sé que hay iglesias que se reunen para orar por los misioneros. Hay iglesias que visitan a los enfermos en los hospitales o salen a evangelizar. Hay otras que hacen postres, etc. y venden esos productos para apoyar a los misioneros. Manos siempre faltan. Si tu iglesia no lo hace, podrías ser la primera persona para iniciarlo. NO tiene que ser algo grande. Es mejor comenzar con algo pequeño. Levántate este fin de semana y ponte a participar en algo que el Señor está haciendo en el mundo. Es mejor que sentarte en el sofá y pasar el fin de semana viendo la televisión.

Have you thought about how wonderful the phrase, "For God so loved the world¨ is?

The jews from the Apostle John´s time knew that God loved them but when John wrote that God loves the world, that was something revolutionary for them. They thought that God loved the jews and no one else. For the majority of the gentiles to think that God loved the world was something new and revolutionary as well.

When I think of the fact that God loves the world, several things come to mind.

First of all, knowing that we´re so full of sin and that we don´t deserve anything from God, the love of God is beyond my understanding. God loves us. God loves the whole world. It´s so good to know it and to receive His love.

Secondly, if God loves the world, this revolutionary fact should change our lives completely. That means that God loves our co-workers. our neighbors, our family members and our enemies. It means that God´s love is so immense that it includes everyone. Those that live around the corner and those that live on the other side of the world. Those that are close to God are loved by Him as well as those that are far away, living in sin.

Thirdly, if God loves the world, then we as His children should act and live accordingly. If God loves the world, then we need a vision that is worldwide as individuals and as churches. Our focus needs to be on reaching the whole world with His love.

We can do something this weekend to participate in what God is doing in our world. We can help the world to hear of His love. The options are without limits. I know that there are churches that meet together on the weekend to pray for missionaries. There are churches that visit the sick in the hospital or that go out to evangelize. Some churches make desserts and other products and sell them. The proceeds go to missions. There is plenty to do. If your church doesn´t do it. You can be the one to start. It doesn´t have to be something big. It´s better to start small. Get up and get going this weekend. Participate in what God is doing in this world. It´s a lot better than spending the weekend watching television!

Como ya saben, Oninxha y Gaby están ministrando con Jucum en Paraguay. En estos días están haciendo evangelismo y están sirviendo en una casa hogar en la ciudad de Limpio que queda una hora de la ciudad de Asunción. En esta primera foto están compartiendo un tiempo devocional con los niños de una casa hogar. En la segunda foto están evangelizando en el barrio. Después, van a ir a Argentina para ministrar allí también.

As you already know, Oninxha and Gaby are ministering in Paraguay with YWAM. They´ve been helping out at a safe house for children in Limpio which is a city about an hour from Asunción. In the first picture they´re sharing a devotional time with the children of the safe house. In the second photo, they´re sharing the gospel in the neighborhood. Afterward they´ll be travelling to Argentina to minister there.

Un cielo lindo y chicas lindas a la vez. Vamos a orar por la ciudad de Limpio y por el ministerio de Oninxha y Gaby con el resto del equipo hoy día. Orando así podemos formar parte de lo que Dios está haciendo en otros lugares en el mundo.

La Encargada. The Woman in Charge.

Aquí hay una foto de Damaris. Ella es la encargada de la casa hogar para los niños. Oninxha y Gaby están pidiendo oración por ella. Hay 14 niños que viven allí. Dos de ellos son especiales. Damaris es la única persona trabajando en este momento. La casa hogar se llama "La Compasión". Está ubicada en la ciudad de Limpio en Paraguay.

Here is a photo of Damaris. She´s the woman in charge of the safe home for the children. Oninxha and Gaby are asking for prayer for her. There are 14 children in the home at the present time. Two are special needs children. Damaris is the only one working there at the present time. The home is calles "La Compasión" which means compassion in English.

La Preparación. Preparation.

¿Quién es capaz de decir hoy día lo que Dios está preparando para nosotros? Murmuramos frecuentemente porque los deberes cotidianos nos parecen limitados y pensamos que merecemos algo más grande. Nuestra esfera de servicio se nos hace tan inadecuada e indigna. Pero quiero decirle que cada hora que pasa cumpliendo sus deberes es esencial para que Dios haga de usted un hombre que Él pueda usar...

Cuando Jesús salió de la oscuridad del anonimato, había invertido treinta años de preparación. Y sólo para cumplir tres años de ministerio. En ese tiempo, fue sometido a la autoridad de sus padres, conoció la disciplina del hogar, dignificó el trabajo duro desempeñándose como carpintero en Nazaret… Y nada imperfecto salió de aquel taller. Todas las semanas se congregó en una iglesia local (y puedo afirmar que era una iglesia muerta) y hasta su perspectiva de las cosas fue incomprendida en el propio círculo familiar.

Pero un día dio un paso más allá de la oscuridad, fue bautizado y entró en el ministerio. Entonces una voz del cielo habló: "Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien tengo complacencia". Los treinta años de oscuridad en el hogar obtuvieron el sello de aprobación del cielo.

Who can tell today for what God is preparing us? So often we murmur at the narrow round of daily duty. So often we thnk we are worthy of something bigger. Our little sphere of service seems so inadeguate and so unworthy. But I want to say to you that every hour of it is essential if God would make you a man He can use...

When Jesus emerged from obsucurity He had put in thirty years of preparation-for just three years of ministry. He was subject to His parents, He knew the discipline of His home, He dignified hard work by laboring as a carpenter in Nazareth. Nothing imperfect was ever turned out of that shop. Jesus attended a local church every Sunday, and, if I may say so, a dead church at that. He lived in a home where His whole outlook was utterly misunderstood in His own family circle.

But one day He stepped out of obscurity, was baptized, and entered into His ministry. Then a voice spoke from heaven and said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." The seal of heaven was on His thirty years of obscurity at home.

Demasiado Grande. Too Big

La mayoría de nosotros -que Dios nos perdone- somos demasiado grandes para que Dios nos use. Estamos tan llenos de nuestros esquemas y maneras de hacer las cosas. Dios nos tiene que humillar, quebrantar y vaciar. Tan bajo nos tiene que poner que necesitamos toda palabra de ánimo del cielo para poder asumir la tarea y atrevernos a seguir adelante en su voluntad. El mundo habla de la ley del más fuerte, pero Dios da esfuerzo al cansado y multiplica las fuerzas del que no tiene ninguna. Él perfecciona su poder en la debilidad; Él usa lo que no es para deshacer lo que es.

Most of us, God forgive us, are too big for God to use. We are too full of our own schemes and of our own way of doing things. God has to humble us and break us and empty us . ¿Misiones de Corto o Largo Plazo? Short or Long Term Missions?

He decicido reponer este artículo en el blog. Lo escribí para hace tiempo porque creo que es importante considerarlo de nuevo como consecuencia del costo de combustible, la inflación de precios, etc.

Algo para Meditar En los últimos 6 meses varias iglesias han tenido que cancelar viajes misioneros al Perú. Cancelar estos viajes ha sido desalentador para las iglesias de los Estados Unidos y para las iglesias del Perú también. La razón por los cambios de planes ha sido el aumento de costos.

Debido al incremento de los costos de viajar tal vez será necesario reevaluar la práctica común de las iglesias de mandar grupos grandes al campo misionero. Normalmente esos grupos grandes ministran una o dos semanas. Viajes misioneros cortos son eficaces en el sentido que aumentan en el cuerpo de Cristo la visión de misiones y la gran comisión. Viajes misioneros son buenos porque también permiten a la gente de la iglesia pasar mas tiempo junto y ministrar juntos. Amistades nuevas son formadas. Siempre es bonito ver a un grupo grande ministrando en unidad.Nuestra iglesia ha recibido muchas bendiciones a través de los grupos que han venido.

A pesar de esas bendiciones tal vez sería más eficaz juntar el dinero que gastaría un grupo de 20 personas en 2 semanas y pagar los gastos de 4-5 personas que podrían quedarse en el campo misionero 2 meses. El mayor costo de un viaje misionero es el costo del vuelo. Siguiendo lo que estamos sugiriendo el grupo más pequeño podría quedarse en el campo misionero más tiempo. El grupo pequeño podría ser formado de los que ya están ministrando en algo que tiene que ver con misiones. Los que están considerando ser misioneros de largo plazo y los que hablan el idioma del país donde va el grupo formarían parte del grupo también.

La selección del grupo dependería de varios factores. El grupo se formaría después de haber orado y después de haber recibido la confirmación del Espíritu Santo. (Véase Hechos 13:1-2) Esto implicaría un cambio de actitud en el caso de algunas iglesias. En muchas iglesias la actitud ha sido, "en ves de tomar vacaciones en las Bahamas, ¿Por qué no hacer un viaje misionero?"
Este enfoque ha sido un surtido de lo bueno y lo malo. Muchas personas han optado por hacer un viaje misionero con su iglesia en ves de tomar vacaciones y han regresado del viaje con una visión más amplia en cuanto al ministerio.

Mayormente ha sido una experiencia contraria. Los que han elegido hacer un viaje misionero en vez de tomar vacaciones y sin haber sido llamados, han sido una distracción para el equipo misionero y una piedra de tropiezo para las iglesias en el campo misionero. Tomando tiempo para orar y escoger el grupo misionero con cuidado brinda ciertas ventajas. Así la iglesia todavía está participando en la obra misionera y podrá recibir un buen reporte de lo que está pasando en la obra mas allá. Al mismo tiempo los que forman el grupo pequeño experimentarán cambios más profundos en sus vidas y podrán ministrar más eficazmente. La potencial de impactar una zona con el evangelio de Cristo es más cuando un grupo se queda 2 meses que cuando un grupo se queda una o dos semanas. Iglesias pequeñas que nunca han podido hacer un viaje misionero al estilo convencional podrán mandar una o dos personas a un ministerio ya establecido donde Dios los usará por un tiempo.

Tal vez estás pensando, "todo esto suena bien pero, "¿Qué hago con el grupo grande? Brian, mencionaste que un beneficio del grupo grande es que la gente del grupo forma amistades nuevas y que así muchos participan en el ministerio. Si mandamos a 4 o 5 no mas nos falta la experiencia del grupo grande." Yo les sugeriría que hay oportunidades de ministrar cerca de la iglesia. Hay barrios pobres. Hay barrios donde viven muchos emigrantes con sus culturas distintas. No hablan el idioma o no lo hablan bien. Ministerios en barrios así dan una experiencia parecida a la del viaje misionero a una fracción del costo. Un grupo grande podría ministrar en un lugar así un fin de semana o un día a la semana. Aquellas personas interesadas en hacer un compromiso de 2 meses al campo misionero podrían ganar experiencia en un ministerio así. Podrían ser elegidos para el viaje misionero del grupo así también. Ministerios así podrían ser una parte de su entrenamiento.

I´ve decided to repost this article. I wrote the article for the blog a while back but it´s time to consider it´s content again due to rising fuel costs and inflation.

Something to think about. In the last 6 months several churches have had to cancel planned missions trips to Peru. Canceling these trips has been disappointing for the home churches and for the churches here in Peru as well. The reason for the change in plans has been soaring costs.

Due to the increase in travel costs it may be necessary for churches to reevaluate the present idea of sending large groups to do a week or two of short term missions. Short terms missions are effective when it comes to increasing awareness in the body of Christ regarding the great commission. Short term missions’ trips are also good because they allow people from the same church to spend time together. While they minister together they grow in friendship. It´s always great to see a big group working together in unity too.Our church has been so blessed through the short term teams that come down.

We do see however that it may be more effective to pool the money that would be spent to send 20 people on a trip for two weeks and use that money to send 4 or 5 for two months. The largest cost of a missionary trip is the money spent on the airline ticket. This way a smaller group could easily stay a much longer time.

The smaller group could consist of people that are already actively involved in some aspect of missions in their church. Those chosen for the longer trip could be the people that area considering long term missionary service or those that speak the language of the country where the group will be ministering. Of course the selection of the group would depend on various factors. The group would be formed after much prayer and the confirmation of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 13:1-2) This would mean a change in strategy for many churches. In many churches the attitude has been, "instead of taking that vacation to the Bahamas why not go on a mission’s trip?

The results of this approach have been at best a mixed bag. Some that haven’t been interested in missions have changed but most of the time the opposite has occurred. Those that have looked at a mission’s trip as an alternative to a vacation have been a distraction to the team and a stumbling block to the local church. Taking time to pray and select a smaller team offers certain advantages. This way the church could still be involved in sending "short term" missionaries. At the same time the smaller number that are sent could bring back a good report. Those selected will have their lives changed in a deeper way and have a potentially greater impact on the area that they are sent to minister. Smaller churches that could never make a large missions trip according to the conventional way of doing things would be able to send one or two people to an established ministry where they could really be used of the Lord for a period of time.

Maybe your thinking, "Well that all sounds great but what do we do with the larger group?" You mentioned that one of the benefits of a short term mission’s trip is that new friendships are formed. If we only send 4 or 5 then we will be lacking the large group experience. I would suggest that there are many opportunities to minister in the inner cities near the church or even in the church neighborhood. Ministries closer to home could provide an introductory experience to missions at a fraction of the costs. A big group could minister in an area like this for a weekend or one day a week. Those interested in making a commitment to a longer missions trip of 2 months or so could even be selected from these groups that minister closer to home. Ministering closer to home could even provide the future missions team with some preparatory training. Inner cities are filled with people from other cultures that speak other languages.

Son deliciosas. Este año estamos esperando hacer galletas y otros productos también. Así algunos colaboran haciendo, otros vendiendo yotros comprando y comiendo.

Summer time has gone. The weather has changed. Now it´s time to make chocotejas again. We make chocotejas in the church to raise money for the missionary work of Koinonia. They´re delicious. This year we´re hoping to make cookies and other products as well. This way some can help by making, others selling and others buying and eating.

It´s a blessing to have young people serving here in Koinonia. Kara es a young woman that has come from the U.S. to help out. She´s a university student that will be finishing her studies soon but has decided to come to Peru for three months. She´s helping out with the Sunday School in Santa Rosa de Villa and in Cañete. She´s going out evangelizing with the other young people as well. We´re so grateful for her help with the Vander Kodde children as well because she´s helping them with their home schooling. Ha estado con nosotros un grupo de Calvary Chapel Gainesville. Han trabajado y ministrado haciendo varias cosas. Fueron a Cañete, Huánuco y Santa Rosa de Villa donde ministraron a los niños entre otras cosas. En Surco han trabajado pintando, limpiando y arreglando. Otra cosa interesante es que han comenzado un proyecto de hydroponía en el patio. Vamos a crecer tomates, y especias para comenzar. ¡Que divertido!

El grupo regresó a los Estados Unidos anoche. Muchas gracias a los cinco por todo lo que han hecho y por su amistad en Cristo. Son buenazos.

Hay muchas cosas que se pueden hacer en el campo misionero. ¿Cuáles son los talentos y dones que Dios te ha dado? Podrías usarlos para servir al Señor en el campo misionero largo o corto plazo.

A group from Calvary Chapel Gainesville has been with us. They´ve worked and ministered doing various things. They went to Cañete, Huánuco and Santa Rosa where they ministered to children and did other things as well. Here in Surco they painted and cleaned and did something very interesting. They started a hydroponics project on the patio. We´re going to grow tomatoes and herbs. That will be fun.

The group returned to the States last night. Thanks so much to the five of them for all that they did and for their friendship in the Lord. You guys were awesome!

On Mothers Day the kids from the class that Jimmy teaches did a special presentation. They sang and acted very well. What they did was entertaining and was about the need to obey. Ken y Mary han sido de gran bendición para nosotros aquí. Regresaron a los Estados Unidos ayer pero están orando para poder regresar al Perú el año que viene. Su deseo es pasar mas tiempo en el campo misionero después de jubilarse en Enero. La visión que Dios les ha dado no es fundar iglesias, ni institutos, sino apoyar a los misioneros con cosas prácticas. ¡Que bueno! Quiero animar a los jubilados en cuanto a eso también. El Cristiano no se jubila. Hay mucho que los abuelos y abuelas pueden hacer como misioneros para apoyar. ¡Anímense!

Ken and Mary have been a great blessing for us here. They returned to the U.S. yesterday but they´re praying about coming back to Peru after the retire in January. Their desire is to spend more time on the mission field. The vision that God has given them isn´t to plant churches or institutions. It´s to help the missionaries that are already on the field with practical things. That´s awesome! I want to encourage those of you that are retired to think about doing something similar as well. Christians don´t retire from serving the Lord. There are many grandparents the could do a lot to help missionaries ont he field. Let´s work together on this!

Llegó Angie de la India el jueves. Llegó con bien pero con muchos sentimientos contrarios. Es lo que se espera de una misionera que acaba de llegar del campo misionero. Estamos contentos por tener a Angie aquí en el país otra vez. En estos días está visitando a su mamá en el norte. Queremos seguir orando por ella para que escuche la voz de Dios en cuanto a su futuro. Gracias a los que han orado por Angie durante de se tiempo en la India.

Angie arrived from India on Thursday. She got here okay but with a lot of mixed emotions. We would expect that from a missionary returning from the field. We´re so happy to have her back in the country again. She´s visiting her mother in the northern part of Peru for a few days. We want to keep praying for Angie that God would show her what He has for her in the future. Thanks to everyone that prayed for her during her time in India.

Hoy día se bautizaron once personas. Pasamos un tiempo lindo en la mañana alabando al Señor, estudiando Su palabra y escuchando los testimonios de los que iban a bautizarse. Después de la reunión fuimos a la piscina donde se bautizaron. Regresamos a la iglesia mas tarde para almorzar juntos. Pastor Tim de Calvary Chapel Pasco predicó la palabra y luego cocinó para todos. ¡Que tal chamba! Bien Hecho Pastor.

Eleven people were baptized in Koinonia today. We had a great time this morning as we worshipped the Lord, studied His word and heard the testimonies of the people that would be baptized later. After the meeting we went to the pool and had the baptism. After baptising the people we returned to the church for lunch. Pastor Tim from Calvary Chapel Pasco taught the word this morning and then cooked for everyone. What a job! Thanks Pastor Tim. You did great.

Estamos muy agradecidos al Señor por el grupo de Calvary Chapel Palm Harbor que ha venido esta semana. Estan haciendo construcción en Santa Rosa de Villa. Estan trabajando duros pero lo que me gusta mas del grupo es que siempre estan contentos y no hemos escuchado ninguna queja. El amor de Dios resplandece en sus rostros. Dios, Eres bueno. We´re very thankful to the Lord for the group from Calvary Chapel Palm Harbor that has come this week. They´re doing construction in Santa Rosa de Villa. El Malecón de Miraflores, Lima Perú. Es un sitio hermoso frente al mar Pacífico. Aquí venimos mi esposa y yo esta noche para pasear. El clima era muy agradable.

The Malecón of Miraflores, Lima Peru. It´s a beautiful place that faces the Pacific ocean. My wife and I came here this evening. The weather was really great.

Mi Esposa y yo salimos esta noche porque tuvimos una noche libre. Me gusta pasar tiempo con mi esposa. Fuimos a pasear en el malecón de Miraflores. Es un sitio precioso porque hay parques frente al mar. Es importante proteger a nuestros matrimonios y una manera de hacerlo es pasar tiempo relajándonos un poco. Al disfrutar el ambiente de un parque bonito podemos tomar un poco de tiempo sin tener que preocuparnos por nada. Es lindo pasear por el parque porque es tranquilo pero hay mas... no cuesta nada tampoco. Prefiero ir al parque con mi esposa que ir a un restaurante donde es difícil conversar. En el parque podemos pasar el tiempo que queremos también. Sería bueno hacerlo con la pareja antes de que se acabe el verano. Pueden llevar una lonchera también

My wife and I went out tonight because we had a free night. I like to spend time with my wife. We went for a walk in the Malecón of Miraflores. It´s a road that has parks that are built on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. It´s important to protect our marriages. One way to do that is to take some time to relax together. Enjoying the atmosphere of a beautiful park, we´re able to take the time we want without having to worry about anything. It´s really nice to go to a park because it´s calm there, but that´s not all... it doesn´t cost anything. I prefer a good park to a restaurant because it can be hard to have a good conversation in a restaurant sometimes. When we´re in the park we can stay as long as we want too. It would be a good idea to go to the park with your spouse before the summer ends. You could bring a picnic basket too!

No ha terminado todavía pero está casi listo todo. El salón se ve muy diferente con las pinturas así. Gracias Señor por ser nuestra vid. Nosotros somos tús ramas y queremos permanecer en tí.

John 15 has become a very important passage of the Bible for me and for the church here that last two years. We´re very thankful to Tatiana for painting the vine in the sanctuary. The work is almost finished. The room looks very different with the paintings. Thanks Lord for being our vine. We´re your branches and we want to remain in you.

Pensando en los niños...

En Koinonia, sabemos que los niños no son el futuro de la iglesia como algunos piensan, sino forman parte de la iglesia ya. Vemos en la biblia que Dios usaba a los niños. Algunos ejemplos son Samuel y el niño que presentó sus panes y pescados al Señor para ser convertidos en comida para cinco mil personas. Entonces los niños son muy importantes para nosotros y tomamos muy en serio el mandato de Jesús cuando dice que tenemos que hacer discípulos.

Leí un estudio hace unas semanas que decía que la gran mayoria de los chicos cuando llegan a ser universitarios dejan de congregarse en una iglesia cristiana y dejan la fe cristiana también. Tal vez es porque muchos no han entendido la necesidad de preparar a nuestros niños y adolescentes para la gran batalla. No saben lo que significa ministrar o defender la fe. Para muchos de ellos, el grupo de adolescentes o jovenes ha sido un lugar para reunirse con amigos, entretenerse con juegos, y escuchar un estudio bíblico bonito pero breve, tipo devocional.

Los niños más grandes deben hacer su parte en el ministerio de la iglesia local y hasta en el campo misionero cuando sea posible. Cuando son pequeños todavía ponemos empeño para enseñarles la palabra de Dios. Cuando ya tienen ocho años o más, ya pueden comenzar a minstrar. Mayormente ministran a los más pequeños pero también participan en otros ministerios. Queremos que los jovenes de la iglesia estén preparados para predicar el evangelio hasta los confines de la tierra.

No queremos un ministerio de jóvenes. Queremos jóvenes que ministran. Tenemos que comenzar cuando son pequeños todavía. La iglesia debe ser un lugar para alabar al Señor y recibir de la palabra de Dios pero también debe ser un campamento de entremamiento de reclutas. Nunca es muy temprano para comenzar. Así dice la Biblia.

Thinking of the children...

In Koinonia we know that the children aren´t the future of the church as some people think. They´re already part of it. In the Bible, we see that God used children quite a bit. A few examples are Samuel and the boy that brought his bread and fish to Jesus so that He could feed the five thousand... So children are very important for us and we take Jesus command to make disciples very seriously.

The older children should be part of the ministry of the local church and even participate on missionary trips if possible. When they´re still little we put a lot of effort into teaching them the word of God. When they´re aleady eight years old or so, they can already begin to minister. They usually minister to smaller children but can participate in other ministries as well. We want the young people of the church prepared to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth.

I read a study a couple of weeks ago that says that the vast majority of kids leave the church and leave the Christian faith when they get to university age. Maybe it´s because we´ve never understood the importance of training our children for the great battle that is going on in our world. They don´t know what it means to minister of defend their faith. For many of them, youth group has been a place to meet up with their friends, play some games and have a very nice but short Bible study which is more a devotional than anything else.

We don´t want a teenage or young peoples ministry. We want teenagers and young people that minister. We must begin while they´re still young.

Anoche los niños entre 8-13 años hicieron una fiesta para los más pequeños de la iglesia. Hicieron un show de payasos, música etc. con el apoyo de algunos adultos. La próxima vez, con el apoyo de Dios se encargarán de la alabanza también. Fue un buen comienzo. Estamos orando mucho por los niños para que capten la visión del ministerio. Creo que ya tienen la idea. En el futuro queremos enviarlos a realizar viajes misioneros cortos para poder ministrar a más niños.

Mi hijo Marco me dijo que todos estaban orando en la escuela domincal esta mañana cuando el profesor Americo les habló de la gente que se está muriendo sin conocer a Cristo y la necesidad de predicar el evangelio. Tenemos que enseñar a nuestros hijos a usar la palabra de Dios como espada del Espíritu y predicar el evangelio, minstrando bajo la unción del Espíritu Santo.

Last night the children between 8-13 years of age did a party for the younger children of the church. They did a clown show with music, etc. They did it with the help of some adults this time. Next time, with the Lord´s help, they will do the worship and praise as well. Anyway, it was a good start. We´re praying a lot for the children so that they will capture the vision to minister. I think they´re getting the idea. In the future we want to send them on short missions trips to minister to other children.

My son Marco told me this afternoon that everyone in his Sunday school class was crying this morning as their teacher Americo shared the need to preach the gospel to the people that are dying without knowing Christ. We must teach our children to use the word of God as the sword of the Spirit and preach the gospel, ministering below the unction of the Holy Spirit.

Los payasitos eran Marco, Rodrigo, Anna y Ariana. Hicieron un show basado en la historia del hijo pródigo para los niños. Fue muy divertido y bíblico a la vez.

The little clowns were Marco, Rodrigo, Anna and Ariana. They did a show based on the story of the prodigal son for the children. It was a lot of fun and Biblical too.

Los niños comieron una hamburguesa pequeña con papas fritas y tomaron un jugo. La hamburguesa era el tamaño perfecto para los niños. Aquí pueden ver a algunas de las chicas que prepararon todo.

The children ate small hamburgers with french fries and had a juice to drink. The hamburgers were just the right size for the children. Here are a few photos of some of the girls that helped prepare everything.
